Short-term car rental service is a tough business. Several companies have tried to establish service in Portland and failed, including ReachNow and Car2Go. Now Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, Ram trucks and Fiat, is coming to Portland with a new car sharing service using Jeep vehicles.
About 90 Jeep Renegade subcompact SUVs have been deployed around Portland. Interested renters can download the Free2Move app on their phones and access the rental fleet entirely through their phones for a "no-touch" experience. Renters must start and end their trips within a set region of about 20 square miles, all inside Portland city limits
To deploy the rental fleet, Stellantis partnered with the Portland city government. "It's great to have free-floating car-share back in Portland," said Chris Warner, Director of the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT). "We're excited to partner with Free2Move on innovative initiatives to make car-share more accessible and sustainable."
As the new service becomes known, Stellantis has plans to quickly double the available fleet, with up to 150 Renegades and 30 compact Jeep Compass SUVs. The vehicle fleet count will continue to increase throughout the rest of 2021 with more Jeep vehicles.
