The Forester Outback will have the customer-driven features that made the Outback Wilderness a popular choice for Northwest buyers.

The Wilderness edition was inspired by regional Subaru dealers and owners who were modifying their vehicles for increased ground clearance and off-road capability. By recreating those modifications at the factory, Subaru is able to offer a more capable vehicle with a full factory warranty, and to ensure that critical safety systems such as EyeSight operate as designed.

The new Forester Wilderness will have 9.2 inches of ground clearance, up one-half inch from a standard Forester. That may not sound like much, but it increases angle of approach from 20.0 degrees in other Forester models to 23.5 degrees on the Wilderness. Similarly, angle of departure increases from 24.6 to 25.4 degrees, and ramp breakover angle moves up from 19.6 to 21.0 degrees.

The new model also receives scuff resistant body cladding, and stock skid plates to protect crucial underbody areas of the vehicle. Under the hood, the Wilderness carries the same 2.5-liter engine with 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, but the standard continuously variable transmission has been updated with a more advantageous final drive ratio and transmission programming. By adding a transmission oil cooler, Subaru doubles the Forester's towing capacity to 3,000 pounds with the Wilderness edition.

The Forester Wilderness will be equipped with enhanced X-mode for off-road driving. This includes snow, dirt and deep snow, and mud modes for increased traction, and hill descent control. Where standard X-Mode is good only at low speeds, the Wilderness X-Mode operates at a wider range of speeds. The Forester Wilderness also gets a 180-degree forward facing camera for precise off-road maneuvering.

Finally, the Forester Wilderness will be available in the unique blue color, just like the Outback, and will have the gold-tone contrasting elements to set it apart from other Foresters visually.

Subaru expects the Forester Wilderness to go on sale in October, 2021 at a starting price of $32,820.
