All-new 2022 Nissan Pathfinder delivers more than you expect
Nissan has been producing the Pathfinder mid-size SUV since 1985, but the brand's signature SUV has been often overlooked in its 37-year history. It's always a mistake to discount Nissan, but it's especially true of the Pathfinder. Now for 2022, Nissan has re-invented the Pathfinder to meet modern expectations.
The newest generation of the Pathfinder comes with up-to-the-minute bodywork, but there's plenty of important stuff under the skin. The Pathfinder is powered by Nissan's trusty and long-serving 3.5-liter V6 engine, but that's now paired with a new nine-speed automatic transmission. The engine offers 284 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque, which delivers capable performance with nine gears to choose from.
The Pathfinder comes with your choice of front-wheel or Nissan's "Intelligent four-wheel-drive." As a full-time single-gear-range system, the Pathfinder is really equipped with all-wheel-drive, similar to other SUVs in the category. In any trim the Pathfinder can tow up to 6,000 pounds when equipped with the optional towing package. Without the towing kit, the Pathfinder can still tow up to 3,500 pounds. This is above average for SUVs of this class, which is a big win for customers who like to pull trailers or boats.
Inside, the Pathfinder benefits from a new interior and new technology. By default, the Pathfinder provides seating for eight passengers, but buyers can select captain's chairs in the second row, which reduces seating to seven. A large 12.3-inch touchscreen is available, along with a 10.8-inch head-up display on the windshield. Heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats are available, and will be either leather or cloth depending on trim level.
Best of all, the new model includes 10.6 cubic feet more cargo space than the outgoing Pathfinder. That translates to 80.6 cubic feet with all the rear seats down, 45 cubic feet with the third row down, and 16.6 cubic feet with all seats in use. That's still enough for a 120-quart cooler or four sets of golf clubs. One big benefit of the Pathfinder is that with all seats folded down, the rear area is big enough to take an entire 4x8 sheet of plywood or drywall.
As a tech powerhouse, Nissan provides a long list of advanced driver assistance features, leading with Nissan Safety Shield 360, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, high beam assist and rear automatic braking. Intelligent forward collision warning, intelligent driver alertness and rear door alert are also standard, while blind spot intervention, intelligent lane intervention and traffic sign recognition are available. Also optional is Nissan's ProPILOT Assist, which offers steering assistance on most roads.
On the road, the Pathfinder delivers plenty of power and a solid, confident ride and handling. This is a vehicle you can drive to work in comfort each day and still be ready to take on the world over the weekend. At a starting price of $33,680, the Pathfinder is well within most budgets.
The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder has been on sale at area Nissan dealers since mid-summer, so there's no reason not to go looking for a deal. This is one new SUV you won't want to overlook.
