Each January in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) showcases the latest electronic technology.Â
From cell phones to satellites, it's all there. In recent years, CES has become as important to the automotive industry as the auto shows in Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, and Frankfurt.Â
This year's CES was held in person despite the threat of COVID, but far fewer people were on hand in person. A great number of the unveilings and announcements were done virtually. As expected, electric vehicles were the stars of the show. Several new and established companies announced all-electric models, including Chevrolet and the newly-unveiled 2024 Silverado EV pickup truck.Â
2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV
The newest member of the Chevrolet truck family is a clean-sheet design developed on GM's dedicated Ultium EV Platform. At launch in 2023, the Silverado EV will be available in two configurations, an RST First Edition and a fleet-oriented Work Truck (WT) model. Each model will offer a comprehensive suite of standard and available safety technologies.
The flagship RST First Edition includes advanced features including four-wheel steering, adaptive air suspension, a multi-configuration tailgate, and a massive 17-inch infotainment screen. In addition, the RST will support Super Cruise, which is General Motors' limited self-driving technology.
The Work Truck trim will launch first for fleet customers and offer the impressive capability to meet the needs of organizations with sustainable transportation goals, including 510 hp and 615 lb-ft of torque. The WT will offer 8,000 pounds of towing and 1,200 pounds of payload. After the initial launch, Chevrolet will introduce a fleet model with up to 20,000 pounds trailering capability when equipped with the Max Tow package.Â
The Silverado EV WT will go on sale in spring 2023, offering GM's longest-range battery with a GM-estimated range of more than 400 miles on a full charge. GM announced a starting price of $39,900 plus destination fees. Then in fall 2023, the fully loaded RST First Edition model, also delivering a 400-mile range, will debut with an MSRP of $105,000, plus destination fees. When production is fully realized, Chevrolet expects trucks at every price point in between.Â
For the first time, a Vietnamese company presented a range of electric vehicles to be sold in the United States. VinFast is a new company based near Hanoi, Vietnam. The company told CES audiences that it plans to offer electric vehicles in five distinct categories from small to full-size vehicles. VinFast used legendary Italian design firm Pininfarina to design its first mid-size and large crossover SUVs.Â
The initial price for the mid-size VF8 is $41,000, while the VF9 will initially be priced at $56,000. VinFast stated that each vehicle will be covered by a warranty of 10 years or 120,000 miles.Â
Additionally, VinFast announced an innovative battery lease program that will offer customers two subscription plans. The "Flexible" plan charges a minimum subscription fee for 300 miles per month, while the "Fixed" plan covers an unlimited range. The total monthly cost for driving VinFast EVs is approximately equal to gasoline costs in each market. Furthermore, VinFast will cover all expenses on battery maintenance and will replace the owner's used batteries for free when charging and discharging capacity falls below 70%. Sony announces its first car
Japanese electronics giant Sony made a departure from its focus on audio components and announced its first electric vehicle. The company that invented the Walkman and the Discman will now dive into auto manufacturing.Â
Sony announced and exhibited an SUV-type prototype vehicle called the VISION-S 02. This vehicle uses the same EV/cloud platform as the prototype VISION-S 01 sedan, which is now being tested on public roads.Â
Sony stated that their technology supports safe driving by recognizing and analyzing the surrounding environment in real-time, with sensors installed 360 degrees around the vehicle. These sensors include high-sensitivity, high-resolution, wide dynamic range image and laser radar sensors that accurately sense three-dimensional space.Â
To deliver an environment that suits each user's preferences, the vehicle will include a new interface that allows users to customize the display theme and the acceleration and deceleration sounds of the vehicle. Vehicle settings, key locks, and user settings can be synchronized by linking the vehicle to the cloud using mobile communication, including 5G communication. Since updates are reflected in the vehicle via over the air (OTA), it is possible to provide security and evolve service functions and value-added offerings continuously.
Additionally, Sony has positioned remote operation as an important technology in anticipation of the arrival of the autonomous driving era. To achieve this, Sony conducted driving experiments connecting Japan and Germany with 5G, and is working with its partners to achieve low-latency transmission (video and control signals) and communication control (monitoring and prediction) using the telematics system installed in VISION-S 01.
Sony did not announce any anticipated on-sale dates or pricing for their vehicles, but the company announced a new subsidiary devoted to bringing these electric vehicles to market.Â
