Every automaker enlarges their SUVs with each redesign, and buyers love it. As a nation, we want to sit higher and have more space in our vehicles every year.

Before this year, Jeep's heavy hitter was the Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee is pretty big and luxurious and offers seating for five passengers. To get into the full size three-row SUV market, Jeep rebooted a classic: the Wagoneer.

The new SUV is the largest ever produced by Jeep, and it allows the Chrysler product family to compete alongside the Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon XL, and the Ford Expedition. Among all those competitors, the Jeep offers the most overall passenger volume, total interior volume, and best legroom in the rear seats. The Wagoneer line offers up to 116.7 cubic feet of interior cargo space; enough to haul a typical refrigerator.

Jeep's new SUV comes in two models, the Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer. Both are based on the same chassis and body, but the Grand Wagoneer adds a larger engine and many luxury features. If you just want seating for eight people and the interior space, the Wagoneer starts at $58,845, while the Grand Wagoneer starts at $88,440.

With the Grand Wagoneer, you start with the 6.4-liter V8 engine, good for 471 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. The Wagoneer uses the long-proven 5.7-liter mild-hybrid HEMI V8 engine at 392 horsepower and 404 pound-feet. Both models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Wagoneer offers a choice of rear-wheel or four-wheel-drive, while all Grand Wagoneer trims come with four-wheel-drive.

Inside, the Grand Wagoneer is a luxury and technology showcase, with up to 75 inches of touchscreen displays, if you buy the rear seat entertainment package. The dashboard and twin center stack displays offer up to 45 inches of screens for front seat passengers. Among the many connectivity features, you can use your Amazon Fire TV account in the Grand Wagoneer, with Alexa integration. Anything you can get on Fire TV at home can be brought into the Wagoneer. You'll also enjoy features like wireless device charging, a camera-based rear view mirror, hands-free driving capability, parking assistance, and an available McIntosh sound system. PMG PHOTO: JEFF ZURSCHMEIDE - The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is available with every luxury feature, including a high quality leather interior. Finally, there's a standard 360-degree backup and parking camera system. You will need that, because the Grand Wagoneer is that big. Driving and parking an SUV of this size is a challenge in most parking lots, which don't offer a lot of room in their marked parking spaces.

On the highway, the Grand Wagoneer is comfortable, powerful, and quiet, as befits a luxury premium SUV. The Wagoneer offers towing capacity up to 10,000 pounds, and the Grand Wagoneer will pull 9,850. The Wagoneer loves wide open spaces and big roads. However, on narrow city streets the Wagoneer becomes a size challenge. There are many Portland streets with on-street parking where you might not be able to get the Wagoneer through safely. Anyone who has tried to drive a full-size pickup truck through Portland's neighborhood will know the feeling.

If you're looking for a powerful premium luxury SUV, the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are serious competitors in the class. However, think seriously about your daily routine before you go big. If that works for you, the Wagoneer line is a great choice.
