With factory incentives and state rebates, you can buy a brand new all-elect Bolt for around $20,000.

But since the price of everything is going up so fast, I'll start with the price. The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV starts at $32,495 including all fees. But that's not even the real bottom line price. Chevrolet is putting $5,900 on the hood of every Bolt, dropping the retail price of the base model to $26,595.

Chevrolet no longer qualifies for the Federal tax credit, but that may be re-authorized in the future. However, all Oregon residents can take a $2,500 state tax credit, and low-to-moderate-income buyers or lessors can qualify for up to $5,000 more in state tax credits. All that money can be taken off the Bolt's price at the dealership, potentially bringing the real price of the Bolt down under $20,000.

Next, I'd mention the Bolt's interior. The base model has an interior that you'd expect for an economy car, with comfortable cloth seats. If you upgrade to the 2LT, you get leather upholstery with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 360-degree surround vision camera system, and blind spot/lane change monitoring. In both trims, you'll get a fully modern stereo system with a large touchscreen interface, and an all-digital driver information screen.

All this is on top of the electric drivetrain. The Bolt's motor yields 200 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, driven directly to the front wheels. That gives the Bolt a 6.5-second 0-60 time; about the same as a Ferrari 308 from the 1980s. More importantly, the Bolt feels quick, and has plenty of acceleration to make a pass or cruise on the Interstate. The Bolt is small enough to be nimble and easy to park, and the hatchback four-door design makes it convenient and useful as an around-town car.

The Bolt's full-charge driving range is 259 miles, and I've usually done a little better than that in real-world testing. When it's time to recharge, you can get a full charge in 7.5 hours with a home-based Level 2 charger. That means you can wake up to a full charge every morning. A home charger requires a 50 Amp 240 Volt circuit, which is the same as most clothes dryers, and financial support is available to help with the installation. Visit for more information on the full range of assistance available.

The Bolt will also accept DC Fast Charging, which is available at a growing number of stations within and outside the Portland metro area. At one of those, you can add 100 miles of range in about 30 minutes.

If you saw the reports of Bolts catching fire, you should know that the cars were recalled and repaired, so any Bolt you buy today will not have that problem.

The bottom line on the Chevrolet Bolt is this: If you want to go electric, this is a great option. The Bolt is every bit as affordable as most economy gas-powered cars, and it's fun to own and drive. The best part lately has been driving right by the gas station, but you'll also save on maintenance down the road because the Bolt does not require oil changes.

If you want to go electric, there's really no excuse not to do it this year. I recommend taking a test drive in the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt to see if you like it. Or visit Forth Mobility at to learn more about electric vehicle options.
