The 2023 Niro is available as a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid or an all-electric crossover.

For the past two years, the Niro has earned J.D. Power's approval as the top-rated mass market EV, based on Power's EV Experience Ownership Study. Niro sales were up 151% last year alone.

Now Kia has launched a completely redesigned second-generation Niro lineup, featuring standard hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and full EV options. The new Niro is slightly larger than the outgoing model, but not a whole lot bigger. The real news is in the electrified drivelines.

The affordable Niro Hybrid

The 2023 Niro Hybrid (HEV) is equipped with a 1.6-liter hybrid driveline with 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Power is passed to the front wheels through a crisp six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The Niro HEV returns 53 MPG, which is best-in-class fuel economy, and offers 588 miles of range on a full tank of gasoline.

On the road, the Niro HEV is smooth and enjoyable. The comparatively low horsepower rating is not a concern as the hybrid system's increased torque makes the Niro quick and enjoyable to drive. Visibility is excellent, as is interior space, and the interior is comfortable. Everything you need is here, without being cluttered up with excess features you'll never use.

The 2023 Niro Hybrid starts at $26,490 and is available in three trim levels.

Best of both worlds: Niro PHEV

The Niro Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) is often overlooked, but this small SUV offers 33 miles of all-electric driving range on a full charge. According to the US Dept. of Transportation, the average American drives about 29 miles each day, so the Niro PHEV will allow most drivers to use gasoline only for special long-distance drives. The Niro PHEV can easily recharge on 120-volt household current overnight, or using any Level 2 240-Volt charger.

On the road, the Niro PHEV drives like an EV until the battery is exhausted, and then shifts to standard hybrid operation. The 1.6-liter FWD driveline offers a total of 180 horsepower for lively performance, using the same six-speed dual-clutch transmission as the hybrid. The interior and technology package is comfortable and well-equipped.

The 2023 Niro PHEV is available in two trim levels, starting at $33,740. From our perspective, the plug-in hybrid is the best value, and offers the greatest versatility and liberation from regular trips to the gas station.

The crown jewel: Niro EV

The crown jewel of the Niro family is undoubtedly the Niro EV. With its all-electric driveline, the Niro EV offers 201 horsepower and 188 lb-ft of torque passed directly to the front wheels with no transmission at all. The Niro's 64.8 kWh battery has a range of about 253 miles, or more if you're careful with your regeneration and speed.

The Niro EV accepts DC Fast Charging up to 85 kW, as well as Level 1 and Level 2 charging. With DC Fast Charging, the Niro EV can go from zero to 80% charge in less than 45 minutes.

On the road, the Niro EV inspires confidence. It has great acceleration and the low-mounted battery packs give the Niro a great ride and precise handling. Inside, you get a high-tech experience that is comfortable and luxurious.

The 2023 Kia Niro EV is available in two trim levels starting at $39,450.

500 kWh of charging and the best warranty

Buyers of the Niro EV will benefit from a partnership between Kia and Electrify America to provide 500 complimentary Kilowatt-Hours worth of charging at Electrify America stations.

Finally, the 2023 Kia Niro in all its forms comes with Kia's 10-Year, 100,000-mile warranty, which is unsurpassed in the automotive industry.

All versions of the 2023 Kia Niro are available at Kia dealers right now.
