West Linn-Wilsonville School District welcomes new school officer
The West Linn Police Department announced Wednesday, Aug. 4, that Jabral Johnson will serve as the West Linn school resource officer beginning in the 2021-22 school year.
Johnson graduated from Oregon State University in 2015 and has been with WLPD since 2019. West Linn-Wilsonville School District Director of Communications Andrew Kilstrom said Johnson was selected through an interview committee process that included district administration and students.
"We're incredibly excited to welcome officer Johnson to the district," Kilstrom said.
In his role, Johnson will work closely with the school district to bridge the gap between law enforcement and youth, according to the district.
The district said the SRO's job is to promote safety and security in local schools. This includes connecting students with law enforcement resources through assemblies and class lessons, collaborating with school staff to create a welcoming and inclusive environment, and supporting schools in emergency situations.
The presence of officers in schools has been a controversial topic in the district, and nationally, as of late. After a community survey and several board meetings last year, the WL-WV School Board voted to retain the SROs and revise the memorandum of understanding between the police departments and the district to clarify the roles and responsibilities of the officers.
Johnson will be stepping into the role as officer Jeff Halverson steps down to pursue a dream of opening a food cart.
