School district intends to gear families with tools to recognize signs of suicidal ideation.

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for Oregon youth. In 2021, 12 children in Clackamas County died by suicide, according to the Oregon Health Authority.

Considering these alarming statistics, the West Linn-Wilsonville School District wants to provide the community with tools to recognize signs and prevent more deaths.

On Sept. 30, the district's social work team will host a training to help families recognize signals of a child experiencing a mental health crisis and learn how to find medical support. The event is organized as part of National Suicide Prevention Month, which spans throughout September.

"We are committed to changing this statistic. Supporting people through a moment of crisis can help them build resiliency," said the press release. "You don't need to be an expert to be a part of this work — just a good listener. This training gives you the tools to engage in this conversation effectively."

The training follows the Question, Persuade, Refer protocol, otherwise known as QPR. The day-long training will help participants recognize when someone is considering suicide and refer them for additional support.

"QPR training is a little like CPR training. Just like you don't need to be a licensed paramedic to administer CPR, you don't have to be a licensed counselor to help a person who is thinking about suicide," said the press release.

The training is open to anyone who lives or works in the school district, but it is specifically designed for families. The district's three certified trainers and school social workers, Brittany Bucholz, Sarah Hiatt and Cheryl Wilson, will lead the workshop.

This workshop will be limited to 30 participants and will be in English. The district advises those who have been impacted by a death by suicide in the last six months to wait for a later workshop. There will be additional workshops this fall, including one in Spanish.

Those interested can find the form to sign up for the workshop at
