Driver reached speeds near 100 miles per hour, police abandoned pursuit due to public safety concern

West Linn Police were involved in a high-speed chase Sunday night, ultimately abandoning pursuit before apprehending the driver.

According to West Linn Police Public Information Officer Jeff Halverson, the chase began around 8:45 p.m. Feb. 24 on Salmon Court. Officers responded to a call about a suspicious looking U-Haul truck, and the driver sped off before the officers were able to identify or question him.

"Officers pursued down Parker (Road) to Salamo (Road), then on to southbound I-205 where the suspect drove at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour," Halverson said in an email. "The officers terminated the pursuit due to public safety concerns."

Halverson said that in the absence of more information, the only charge for the driver would be attempt to elude.

"The entire call, from contact to termination, lasted six minutes," Halverson said.
