Wilsonville Parks and Recreation Department hosts kickball event for ages 6 and up

PMG FILE PHOTO - Community members can sign up to play a game of kickball at Memorial Park this September. This September, youngsters in Wilsonville will have the opportunity to challenge their parents, their grandparents — or any adult — on the kickball field.

For one day, the Wilsonville Parks and Recreation Department has organized an adult versus youth kickball game Sunday, Sept. 8, in Memorial Park. Ball field four is reserved for three different times and each game is divided by age group with teams of no more than 20. Each game will last about an hour.

Six-to nine-year-olds will play at 10 a.m., youth ages 10-13 will play at 11:30 a.m and 14-18-year-olds will play at 1 p.m., "which should be the rowdiest game," said Erica Behler, recreation coordinator.

This will be the first year the parks and recreation department has hosted this kickball event. Behler said the department typically sees interest in youth soccer and mini hooper programs, so they suspect there will be a successful turnout, even though she doesn't anticipate much competitiveness from the younger crowd.

"It's a healthy way to get out with your kids (and) do something outdoors and active," Behler said.

For teenagers, Behler thinks the game will encourage a healthy dose of competitiveness, "especially if you can beat your parents," she said.

"We've been trying to get events and activities going for teens. They've traditionally been a hard group to rally into our programs," Behler added.

To participate, adults and youth will each have to pay $5 and register by Aug. 27. The fee will include a team T-shirt that says "New kicks on the block." The activity is open to both residents and non-residents for the same price.

"We'll have our speakers down there with good music bumping," Behler said, adding that they hope to have pizza available as well.

She encourages families who have multiple children in different age groups, to bring lawn chairs, picnics and be spectators for the day.

If the event proves to be successful, the parks department will plan to continue the activity in subsequent summers.
