Wilsonville group to sell holiday decorations Dec. 7 to benefit scholarship program

PMG FILE PHOTO - Members of the Wilsonville Garden Club prepare their swags during the 2018 event. For those looking for foliage to spruce up their holiday decor, the Wilsonville Garden Club's annual swag sale might have just what you're looking for.

At the sale, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Wilsonville Public Library, the club will sell centerpieces — intricate embellishments that are designed for indoor use and placed in a tray of water — and swags with holiday-themed decorations. The event raises money for horticultural scholarships.

"They're beautiful holiday decorations, both the centerpiece and the swags. And the other aspect is community. The tradition is wonderful and people should come just because it's a great way to start off the season to have your front door decorated and perhaps the centerpiece for your holiday event. And it supports a fabulous cause," Garden Club member Beth Mistretta said.

The Wilsonville Garden Club is a nonprofit organization made up of dozens of local horticulturists, and the garden sale is its biggest fundraising event of the year. The group spends November planning the event and a few days in early December creating the pieces. The club also receives branches and ferns from the City of Wilsonville and local farms.

"Without that we would not have the greens to do this," Mistretta said.

Mistretta said artistic experience varies among club members, but some are exceptionally adept. And members use a variety of materials such as ornaments, bows, ribbons, pinecones, leaves, toy animals and much more to create their pieces.

"We have such artistic members. We have lots of master gardeners, people who have been in the horticulture industry. I don't know of any group I belong to that is more sharing of that information," Mistretta said. "They (the pieces) are always different. It's the same type of thing, but the style is different. Each person brings something different to the finished product."

Mistretta said the group has donated about $2,000 a year for the past 15 years to agricultural programs and the costs of pieces range from $20-$30.

"(We're) making a product that is going to raise funds for the next generation of horticulturists," Mistretta said.

"It's the kickoff to the holiday season," Mistretta said. "If you just walk in the library, the smell, it's Christmas. It's the holidays."
