Throughout January, West Linn Police will keep up with extra patrols for drunk and distracted drivers

After stepping up DUI patrols for the holiday season, the West Linn Police Department has decided to keep up with the enhanced patrols through the month of January.

According to WLPD Public Information Officer PIO Jeff Halverson, the department usually starts enhanced patrols around Thanksgiving and continues through New Year's, because people tend to drink more than usual at holiday parties or family gatherings.

"Enhanced DUI patrols" mean in addition to the regular officers on duty, WLPD will have one or two extra officers on the lookout for impaired or distracted drivers.

"These enhanced DUII patrols are funded by a grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation through Oregon Impact," a press release from WLPD reads.

Because a crash related to distracted driving occurs every two and a half hours in Oregon, WLPD will use the enhanced patrols to lookout for distracted drivers as well.
