Dementia education, DUll patrols and sending your Valentine a singing love note

Can dementia be prevented?

Dr. Joseph Quinn of the OHSU School of Medicine will make the case that there are strategies for maintaining brain health and avoiding dementia that are science-based and endorsed by medical experts during a presentation at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the West Linn Library, 1595 Burns St.

Quinn also will discuss research underway to improve the ability to prevent dementia. This program is put on by BRAINet, the volunteer organization of the OHSU Brain Institute.

Extra DUll patrols this month

The West Linn Police Depart will add more patrol cars to the streets during February in an effort to stop distracted and intoxicated drivers.

WLPD reminds that drunken drivers cost the U.S. an estimated $132 billion a year and only about 1% of those who drive impaired are caught and arrested.

Send a singing Valentine

On Feb. 14, nattily dressed barbershop quartets will fan out across the Portland metro area to deliver Singing Valentines to hundreds of special sweethearts.

The sound of harmony will ring out in offices, restaurants, schools and homes throughout Oregon. Wherever they appear, they'll draw a crowd — and sometimes a few tears.

The quartets belong to local chapters of the 22,000-member national nonprofit Barbershop Harmony Society, based in Nashville. They'll be saying "I love you" in song.

A typical Singing Valentine costs around $50 and includes two songs sung in harmony, a personalized card, a photo, and a rose or perhaps a whole dozen roses.

Men and women alike are on the receiving end. "It's especially fun to deliver a Singing Valentine from a woman to her husband or boyfriend," said Norm Lawson, of the Rose City Timberliners Chorus in Portland. "My quartet went to a manufacturing plant here in Portland, and caught a guy going off-shift. He was stunned. His co-workers gathered around, and were ready to start razzing him — until they saw the tears welling up in his eyes."

To order a Singing Valentine, contact the Rose City Timberliners Chorus at 503-544-3286 or Bridgetown Sound Chorus at 971-238-7664. For orders in any of 250 cities outside the Portland metro area, visit the Barbershop Harmony Society Singing Valentine service at http://www.singingvalentines.com to search by state.
