The winner of Tuesday's primary will challenge Democrat incumbent Rachel Prusak for the house seat in November. No Democrats challenged Prusak in this year's primary.

In 2018, Prusak, a nurse practitioner, overcame incumbent Republican Julie Parrish to win District 37.

"As a hometown mom, I'm honored to have the confidence of my neighbors in West Linn and Tualatin,"Sloop said in a press release Tuesday night. "In a time when people are struggling with loss of work, uncertainty about how their kids will be educated, and protecting their family's health, we need leaders who will focus on the needs of our communities before all else."

Earlier this year, Sloop said she decided to run in this election because she felt like legislators in Salem were not listening to the needs of people in West Linn and Tualatin.

Similarly, Garcia, a realtor and property manager, said he was running for the legislature to challenge the supermajority, which he felt ignored a large portion of the population.

Over the past few days, Sloop said she's made hundreds of calls to voters who told her they are ready for a change in leadership.

At the time results were posted, Sloop had received a total 2,382 votes from Clackamas County voters and 987 from Washington County voters with 13 of 24 precincts counted.

Sloop saw support from key local republicans like former District 37 Rep. Scott Bruun and former Oregon Republican Party Chairman Allen Alley.

"House District 37 has two very committed Republican candidates that want to change the direction of our state government," Garcia said Tuesday night. "They're very fortunate both Kelly and I are running. I think Kelly did a great job with the campaign and whichever one of us prevail, either one of us will be a strong candidate to go up against Rachel Prusak."
