Sakelik to serve as council president for remainder of year
At a special meeting of the West Linn City Council Monday, May 18, Teri Cummings resigned her position as council president and nominated Councilor Richard Sakelik to serve in the position for the remainder of his term, which expires at the end of 2020.
The council president, unlike the mayor, who is elected by citizens, is selected by the council at the start of each year.
Cummings said she made this decision, "In the spirit of honoring Councilor Sakelik's original interest in holding that position, which he put off when he found out he needed to battle cancer."
"Now that his battle with cancer is complete and he has a clean bill of health, I'd like to celebrate that by now resigning and now therefore move to elect councilor Richard Sakelik to be council president for the remainder of 2020," Cummings continued.
Beginning late last year, Sakelik attended council meetings virtually as he battled cancer. He returned to the dias in person early in March.
Sakelik said it was a privilege to be healthy enough to serve as council president.
Council president is a largely honorary position. The president's main role is to lead the rest of the council in the mayor's absence.
