West Linn Knights, other WWWL teams to play in Marion County, allowing for fans
Local baseball fans who suspected it would be months before they could catch a game at the ballpark were pleased to learn that the metro area's new Wild Wild West League, which includes the West Linn Knights, will be playing the first portion of its inaugural season at North Marion High School, where 150 fans will be allowed at each game.
The Knights will play their first game at 2:30 p.m. July 12 against the Portland Gherkins.
North Marion is located in Aurora, just beyond the border of Clackamas County in Marion County.
Marion County has entered phase 2 of COVID-19 restrictions, which allows up to 250 people to gather in an indoor or outdoor venue if they maintain 6 feet of distancing and other safety measures
"Our plan is to start at North Marion High School and once Multnomah County gets into Phase 2, we'll make the switch back, whenever that might be," explained Ross Campbell, general manager of the Portland Pickles and one of the league's organizers.
When the metro area enters Phase 2, Campbell said games will be played at the Pickles' home field at Walker Stadium in Portland.
"We're excited to be bringing baseball back to the Portland Metro area and giving all the players on the teams a chance to play again. A lot of them had their seasons cut short," Campbell said.
He added that sports fans in the Portland area, who have been starved for live sports, are excited to have local teams back in action.
Campbell said concessions will be sold at the games, though alcohol is not allowed on campus at North Marion High School so those wishing to enjoy a beer while at a game will have to wait until the metro area enters Phase 2.
The West Linn Knights' recently released roster features local talent in Tim Tawa, a 2017 West Linn grad, who played the last two seasons at Stanford before COVID-19 ended his junior season. Other local talent on the team includes Jake and Thomas Dukart, Lake Oswego natives now playing college baseball at Oregon State.
Also rostered is the son of head coach Brooke Knight, Briley. After a standout freshman year at Utah, Briley Knight recently transferred to the University of Portland. Briley Knight previously played under his dad with the Corvallis Knights in 2019.
Tickets for the Wild Wild West League are now on sale for all games from opening day July 11 through playoffs in mid-August.
