After departing from the West Linn High School football program last year for a job as offensive coordinator for the Houston Roughnecks in the XFL league, Chris Miller will return as head coach at WLHS.

The school announced Miller's return Wednesday evening. He replaces Keanon Lowe, who was hired at WLHS but announced in late June that he was stepping down to take a job at UCLA — before he'd coached a snap at the high school.

"Coach Miller was selected from an impressive candidate pool following a thorough interview process that included input from student-athletes," a press release from WLHS read.

In his first stint with the Lions between 2014 and 2019, Miller had a 60-16 record and was at the helm when WLHS won a state championship in 2016.

"Coach Miller brings a wealth of football knowledge and experience to our football program," Athletic Director Brigham Baker said in the press release. "After talking with groups of players from all grade levels, it was evident Coach Miller was the best candidate for the job. Fun, approachable, exciting, passionate, and a leader are all attributes the student-athletes wanted, and we believe Coach Miller possesses all of those qualities."

Miller's return to West Linn comes on the heels of the XFL suspending operations and announcing it would not return in 2021. The inaugural season for the league ended after just five games, as the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the rest of the season.

Miller is a graduate of Sheldon High School who went on to play football at the University of Oregon and was drafted in the first round of the 1987 NFL Draft.

He coached for the Arizona Cardinals NFL team before arriving in West Linn in 2014.
