PMG PHOTO: HOLLY BARTHOLOMEW - The speed limit on Salamo Road in West Linn dropped to 25 mph between Weatherhill Road and Hoodview Avenue. After a review by the Oregon Department of Transportation of the speed zone on Salamo Road, the city of West Linn has decided to drop the speed limit between Weatherhill Road and Hoodview Avenue from 35 to 25 mph.

According to the city, several citizens asked the Traffic Safety Committee (an advisory board to the City Council) to examine how to improve pedestrian safety in the area.

"One of those requests was to see if we could reduce the speed from Weatherhill Road to the school (Rosemont Ridge Middle School)," said West Linn Communications Director Alicia Shroyer. "Given the high level of pedestrian activity in this area, we reached out to ODOT to review the section since local jurisdictions can only change speed limits by 5 mph."

In its study, ODOT found an above-average percentage of accidents through this section of Salamo Road, Shroyer said.

Based on those findings, ODOT recommended dropping the speed to 25 mph as the best safety remedy.
