The local middle school team steps to win its 2017 season opener impressively

The West Linn Varsity eighth-grade team dominated its season opener from the first whistle Saturday, cruising past Centennial 36-0.

Lucas Reininga set the tone with a dazzling kickoff return on the opening play. Hard running by Rochne Beecham followed before Kace Naone benefited by a gaping hole opened by Jacob Thomsen to score on a short run.

West Linn scored again moments later when the Centennial quarterback, under siege by a relentless Lion defense spearheaded by Eric Mee and Avery McCormick, threw a pick six in the end zone to defensive end Mykah Cummings. West Linn added another first-quarter score on a short scramble by quarterback Zeke Viukhola set up by a long Naone punt return.

The Lions tacked on two second quarter TDs, a short run by Zach Johnson and 30-yard catch by Mason Van Beenen, and added a field goal from Cooper Berggren to make it 36-0 — the eventual final score — at the break.

Lineman Nate Watton set the tone on offense, while Cooper Wilson and Brady Jordan led the Lions' "D."

Next up, West Linn hosts Oregon City at 5 p.m. Saturday.
