It's almost time to kick off the 98th iteration of the West Linn vs. Oregon City high school football rivalry.
But first, the Optimists Club of Oregon City is inviting the public to attend a breakfast on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the Oregon City Elks Club to preview the annual "Battle for the Bridge" contest.
The event is scheduled to begin at 6:30 a.m. and costs $10 per person. The Oregon City Elks Club is located at 610 McLoughlin Blvd. in Oregon City.
Former Pioneers coach Greg Lord will be the featured speaker and will assist the Optimists in paying tribute to Oregon City coach Dustin Janz, West Linn coach Chris Miller and the senior players from both teams.
The Oregon City-West Linn series started in 1921 and is recognized as the longest uninterrupted high school rivalry series west of the Mississippi River.
Oregon City holds a 50-46-1 lead in the all-time, regular-season series, although West Linn has won four straight — or five counting the Lions' 34-13 playoff win over the Pioneers in the 2016 Class 6A quarterfinals.
This year's Oregon City-West Linn game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at Oregon City's Pioneer Memorial Stadium.
