PMG PHOTO: MILES VANCE - West Linn's Rosie Larsen and the Lions were one of the state's best teams a year ago but will face challenges on some of the red letter days that lie ahead in 2019.It's on.

The 2019 fall high school sports season is here.

The football pads are getting strapped on, the soccer goals have been moved into place and legs are being stretched for the next training run.

While practice kicked off Monday, Aug. 19, for football, volleyball, boys and girls soccer, and boys and girls cross country, the real excitement still lies ahead.

In volleyball, varsity play starts on Friday, Aug. 29. High school soccer and cross country teams follow suit by opening their seasons on Friday, Aug. 29, as well. And in football, the first games are set for Friday, Sept. 6.

Beyond that, however, there are the red letter days of the 2019 fall campaign. These are the days of significance, the rivalry days, the league championship days, and the days that decide whether your favorite West Linn team reaches the state playoffs and gets to extend its dreams of glory and greatness even further.

Here's a quick rundown of the red letter days ahead for each of the Lions' fall-season varsity teams.

Football: The Lions open play in head coach Chris Miller's swan-song season when they host Central Catholic at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6. The Rams are a perennial power who won the 2014 state crown, finished second to West Linn in 2016 and reached the Class 6A quarterfinals in 2018.

After that, the Lions host Sheldon — the team that ended their 2019 season in the quarterfinals and the 2019 state runner-up — at 7 p.m. Sept. 20, host 2019 Three Rivers League and state champion Lake Oswego at 7 p.m. Oct. 11, and host Oregon City in their 99th series matchup at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1. The first round of the Class 6A state playoffs is set for Friday, Nov. 8.

Volleyball: West Linn jumps into the 2019 season at full throttle, hosting Lakeridge in TRL play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10. As to the team's other scarlet days, the Lions — they won the TRL and finished third at state a year ago — face 2018 Three Rivers runner-up Lake Oswego at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24 at Lake Oswego High School, host the Lakers at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, then host the annual West Linn Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 24. The state playoffs open on Oct. 30.

Boys Soccer: The Lions kick off their 2019 campaign at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, against Grant at Delta Park's Strasser Field. After that, the team — which tied for the 2018 TRL title — faces last year's co-champion Tigard twice, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26 at West Linn, then at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22 at Tigard. The state playoffs open on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Girls Soccer: West Linn, coming off a 2018 Three Rivers championship and state semifinal appearance, begins its 2019 season at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, when it hosts McMinnville. After that, the Lions play at Mountainside (a 2018 6A semifinalist) at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, host Clackamas (the 2018 state runner-up) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, and host last year's TRL runner-up Lake Oswego at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24. The state playoffs open on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Boys Cross Country: The Lions kick off the year with a couple early invitationals, running in the Bill Chapman Invitational at Hillsboro's Rood Bridge Park at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, followed the next day by the Wilsonville Night Meet on Friday, Aug. 30. West Linn then opens defense of its 2018 TRL district championship when it hosts Tigard and Tualatin at Mary S. Young State Recreation Area at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25. The 2019 Three Rivers League district meet is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 30 at Clackamas Community College.

Girls Cross Country: Along with their male team counterparts, West Linn's girls kick off their 2019 season with those same two invitationals, the Bill Chapman Invitational at Hillsboro's Rood Bridge Park at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, followed the next day by the Wilsonville Night Meet on Friday, Aug. 30. West Linn, which finished third in the 2018 TRL district meet, then kicks off Three Rivers League action when it hosts St. Mary's, Tigard and Tualatin at Mary S. Young State Recreation Area at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25. The 2019 Three Rivers League district meet is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 30 at Clackamas Community College.
