The Lions show their quality despite two top runners battling illness Friday

PMG PHOTO: MILES VANCE - West Linn sophomore Maddie Meyer heads for home during the Meriwether Cross Country Classic at Meriwether National Golf Course in Hillsboro on Friday, Sept. 20.The weather was perfect at Hillsboro's Meriwether National Golf Course on Friday, Sept. 20, and in response, the West Linn girls cross country team was ready to tee it up.

The Lions, competing in the Meriwether Cross Country Classic on Friday, ran to ninth place in the 32-team field and created some excellent individual performances along the way.

"My squad enjoyed the meet," said West Linn coach Jay Schrotzberger. "It was definitely worth the trip and we'll be going back."

That said, the Lions faced some challenges along the way, those beyond the day's huge field and fast pace.

"We had an up-and-down day out there," Schrotzberger said. "Some kids ran great, some not so much. But that owed more to kids being sick or just getting over being sick than anything."

West Linn, which saw both senior Alyssa Rowe and junior Makenna Kellogg slowed by illness, was led by sophomore Maddie Meyer's 33rd-place finish at 19 minutes, 56.70 seconds and a 52nd from sophomore Kate Sousley at 20:36.0. Their efforts helped West Linn run to ninth place overall with 274 points. Jesuit won the meet with 36 points while North Salem was second at 92.

"Sophomores Maddie Meyer and Kate Sousley had great days, as did freshmen Shyan Hargis and Meg DeVall," Schrotzberger said.

Among the other Three Rivers League teams in the field, Tualatin was third at 178 points, St. Mary's took sixth at 238, Tigard was seventh at 269 and Lakeridge was eighth at 271.

The day's top five individual finishers included Jesuit's Chloe Foerster (first at 18:16.30), Jesuit's Alexis Kebbe (second at 18:25.90), Tualatin's Kaitlyn Gearin (third at 18:31.40), St. Mary's Fiona Lenth (fourth at 18:31.60) and Skyview's Samantha Williams (fifth at 18:40.80).

Among West Linn's other runners, Rowe ran to 65th at 21:02.10, freshman Shyan Hargis was 78th at 21:12.60, sophomore Ava Rodriguez took 79th at 21:14.40, Kellogg was 93rd at 21:30.70, senior Gabriella McVicker placed 11th at 21:58.40, sophomore Sarah Talbert was 151st at 22:56.20, and sophomore Addison Sobotta placed 195th at 24:40.70.
