West Linn girls cross country wins twice in Three Rivers League opener
It was just the first round of Three Rivers League action, but the West Linn cross country teams got their money's worth last week.
The Lions, competing against Tualatin, Tigard and St. Mary's on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Mary S. Young State Recreation Area, held their own, too, with the West Linn girls winning twice and the Lion boys getting a split against their two opponents.
In upcoming races, the Lions run in the Flat and Fast Invitational at McMinnville's Joe Dancer Park on Friday, Oct. 4.
The West Linn girls were solid as a rock in their three-way meet, beating St. Mary's 26-31 and Tigard 21-38, while falling to Tualatin 27-30 to kick off their year with a 2-1 Three Rivers League record.
In the day's other dual meets, Tualatin beat Tigard 19-49, Tualatin beat St. Mary's 24-31 and St. Mary's beat Tigard 22-35.
While West Linn didn't have the day's fastest individuals in the 5,000-meter race — the top three places went to St. Mary's Fiona Lenth (first in 19 minutes, 28 seconds), Tualatin's Kaitlyn Gearin (second at 19:37) and Tigard's Lillian Herman (third at 19:42) — the Lions definitely held their own. St. Mary's Kira Mahaffy also managed a top-five finish, placing fifth at 20:06.
For West Linn, sophomore Maddie Meyer led the way by placing fourth overall with a finishing time of 20:05. She had plenty of help, though, with freshman Meg DeVall taking sixth with a mark of 20:11 and senior Alyssa Rowe seventh at 20:15.
Also scoring for the Lions were sophomore Kate Sousley (12th at 20:37) and junior Makenna Kellogg (17th at 20:55).
The rest of the West Linn varsity included: freshman Shyan Hargis (19th at 21:00); sophomore Ava Rodriguez (20th at 21:00); sophomore Sarah Talbert (32nd at 21:59); and senior Gabriella McVicker (33rd at 22:18).
Like their female counterparts, the West Linn boys team battled in its 2019 TRL kickoff, beating Tigard 26-31 and dropping a tight 27-30 decision to Tualatin to start the league season with a 1-1 mark.
Tualatin beat Tigard 23-34 in the day's other dual meet.
The Lions built their success on the strength of three top-seven finishers led by individual champion Dash Lipsey. Lipsey, a senior, won the race with a finishing time of 16:27, while Tualatin's Samuel Roach was second at 16:27.
The rest of the day's top five included Tigard's Lincoln Woodhouse (third at 16:54), West Linn junior Cole Rogers (fourth at 16:55) and Tigard's Matthew Moller (fifth at 17:16).
Following Lipsey and Rogers' success, junior teammate Jaiden Fishbein stepped up to finish seventh at 17:19. Also scoring for the Lions were freshman Stanley Mylet (13th at 17:47) and sophomore Jason Chitwood (18th at 17:54).
The rest of the Lions' varsity competitors included: sophomore Cavan Mikami (19th at 17:55); senior Elijah Cirioli (25th at 18:27); and senior Casey Culbertson (26th at 18:37).
