Seniors Casey Tawa and Ryan Seth are named first team on both offense and defense

PMG PHOTO: MILES VANCE - West Linn senior lineman Luke Popma was named first-team all-Three Rivers League after helping his team average more than 41 points per game and reach the Class 6A state quarterfinals.The West Linn football team worked a lot, won a lot, played a lot of the best teams in the state and accomplished a lot, too.

In response, the Lions were richly rewarded in the voting for the 2019 Three Rivers League all-star teams. In total, West Linn players were honored at 16 different spots, including first-team all-TRL picks Ethan Coleman, Casey Tawa (on both offense and defense), Gavin Haines, Luke Popma, Ryan Seth (on both offense and defense), Cole Peters and Thomas McNamara, with Seth sharing honors as Defensive Lineman of the Year.

The Lions' defense — led by Seth, Tawa at cornerback, and Peters and McNamara at linebacker — helped hold opponents to just 24 points per game. Seth, a senior, finished his year with 63 tackles (40 solo), including a team-high 9.5 sacks and 16 tackles for loss.

Tawa, a senior, ended his year with 32 tackles (24 solo), along with one interception and 11 passes defended. Peters, a junior, led the Lions with 130 tackles (95 solo), including 4.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss. And McNamara, a junior, finished with 79 tackles (54 solo), including one sack and five for loss.

Also honored on defense were the following honorable mention picks: junior lineman Zach Holmes; junior lineman Mitchell Duea; senior lineman Damiko Tidmore; senior linebacker Treyten Burke; and senior safety Ethan Loun.

On offense, Coleman (a senior quarterback), Popma (a senior lineman), Haines (a junior running back), Seth and Tawa helped the Lions rack up 495 points for an average of 41 points per game. As a team, the Lions averaged 290 yards passing and 178 yards rushing per game.

Coleman passed for 3,202 yards in 2019 with 39 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while completing 64 percent of his throws, with Tawa catching 70 passes for 1,245 yards and 18 TDs. Haines, meanwhile, rushed for 1,620 yards on 203 carries with 21 TDs.

Also honored on offense were: Tidmore at tight end (second team); senior Tucker Parrish at guard (second team); Loun at kick returner (second team) and wide receiver (honorable mention); junior Clay Masters at wide receiver (honorable mention); Holmes at tackle (honorable mention); and junior Kyle Dramov at guard (honorable mention).
