The Lions did just that, sweeping to victory in the Three Rivers League banked slalom competition at Mt. Hood Meadows on Sunday, Feb. 2.

The West Linn girls — competing under sunny skies in 50-degree temperatures on 6 fresh inches of snow — were particularly dominant, racking up 2,370 points to easily outscore second-place Lake Oswego's 1,265 points.

While the course included two new turns and several new jumps, the Lions looked right at home, with seniors Ava Paul and Kyli Miller notching the two top times of the day. Paul notched a time of 54.273 seconds on the first of her two runs, while Miller went 57.438 on her first run to place second overall among 26 competitors who posted scores. Paul's winning run netted the Lions 1,000 points, while Miller picked up 800 points.

The other West Linn riders who contributed to the team score included junior Ashley Chon (sixth overall at 1:41.144 for 400 points) and freshman Ciena Lee (15th overall at 1:12.109 for 170 points).

The complete team scoring on the girls side included: West Linn 2,370, Lake Oswego 1,265, Lakeridge 925, Wilsonville 800, Oregon City 700 and Canby 330.

In the ensuing boardercross competition, Paul placed first overall and Miller was leading her bracket but fell after the final turn and couldn't recover.

Next up, the Lions will compete in slopestyle at Mt. Hood Meadows on Saturday, Feb. 15.

Boys Competition

The West Linn boys were stellar, too, the team amassing 2,100 points to outscore runner-up Oregon City's total of 1,700.

West Linn sophomore Ronen Retzlaff set the pace on Sunday, finishing with a time of 50.389 on the first of his two runs to place first among 70 riders and score 1,000 points for the Lions.

Senior Ashton Bowerly, sophomore Lucas O'Doud-Vega and junior Evan Schleef also stepped for West Linn, with Bowerly sixth at 52.295 for 400 points, O'Doud-Vega eighth at 53.428 for 320, and Schleef ninth at 53.789 for 290.

The complete team scoring on the boys side included: West Linn 2,100, Oregon City 1,700, Lake Oswego 1,116, Canby 890, Lakeridge 354 and Wilsonville 290.

In the ensuing boardercross competition, O'Doud-Vega finished fourth overall, while both Bowerly and Retzlaff were knocked out in the fourth heat.

Next up, the Lions will compete in slopestyle at Mt. Hood Meadows on Saturday, Feb. 15.
