West Linn's Destiny Rodriguez wrestles her way to state
West Linn's Destiny Rodriguez has been proving herself all season long.
Rodriguez, a freshman member of the Lions' wrestling team, proved herself again in the OSAA Girls North Regional, held at Century High School on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7-8.
Rodriguez stepped up to win the tournament's 145-pound bracket, and in the process, earned a berth in the upcoming state tournament.
Rodriguez opened the event with a bye, then came through with four straight first-round pins to take the tournament title. In the process, Rodriguez became the first West Linn wrestler to earn a berth to the girls state tournament.
The OSAA began hosting girls state wrestling tournaments in 2018 after first having girls compete in exhibition matches in 2017.
After her initial bye, Rodriguez pinned Tillamook's Montana Taylor 53 seconds into the first round of their second-round match, pinned Hillsboro's Ashley Gonzales 46 seconds into the first round of their quarterfinal, pinned Forest Grove's Ella Taylor 1:19 into the first round of their semifinal, then pinned Sandy's Chloe Omey 1:17 into the first round of their championship match.
Next up, Rodriguez will test herself against the state's best when she wrestles at the OSAA state tournament on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28-29, at Portland's Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The first session runs from 4-10:30 p.m. Feb. 28, Session 2 begins with semifinals at 10 a.m. Feb. 29, the Parade of Champions follows at 6:30 p.m. and the finals from 7-10:30 p.m. Feb. 29.
