The Lions will send 14 riders to this week's state competition at Mt. Hood Meadows

COURTESY PHOTO - The West Linn snowboard team has looked at home on the mountain all year, and next, the Lions will test themselves in the state competition at Mt. Hood Meadows.The West Linn snowboard team is right where it wants to be, and is right where it wants to be at the most important time of the year.

The Lions boys and girls teams swept to victory in the final Three Rivers League competition of the year, and in the process, set the table for the upcoming state snowboard competition. That event kicked off on Wednesday, March 11, and continues through Saturday, March 14, at Mt. Hood Meadows.

In total, West Linn is sending 14 riders to state, with four — Ava Paul, Ashton Bowerly, Lucas O'Doud-Vega and Peter Moller — qualifying in all four events.

Other qualifying riders include: Kyli Miller, Averie McCurry, Ashley Chon, Ronen Retzlaff, Evan Schleef, Derek Pickett, Seth Sorensen, Stephen Whittington, Asher Isaacson, Gavin Genoa and alternate Anders Friis.

Boys Competition

In the 2020 TRL finale — a half-pipe competition — the West Linn boys powered past Lake Oswego to finish first with 494 points (the Lakers were second with 377).

The Lions built their success by recording four of the day's top five finishes, that effort led by Bowerly and his winning total of 141 points for the better of his two runs. West Linn's other three varsity scorers included: O'Doud-Vega (third with 126 points); Moller (fourth with 116); and Retzlaff (fifth with 111).

Only Lake Oswego's Josh Lucas and his second-run total of 138 points prevented a West Linn sweep.

For the West Linn V2 team — which placed third overall — it was Sorensen (seventh at 102), Whittington (10th at 97), Friis (14th at 86) and Cole Bundy (19th at 81).

The complete team scoring included: West Linn 494, Lake Oswego 377, West Linn V2 366, Wilsonville 351, Oregon City 346, Canby 341, Oregon City V2 308, West Linn V3 294, Oregon City V3 276, Canby V2 269, West Linn V4 251, Lake Oswego V2 241, Lake Oswego V3 204, Lakeridge 127, Oregon City V4 126, Canby V3 114, West Linn V5 91.

Girls Competition

In the girls half-pipe, the Lions took top honors with 349 points while Lake Oswego was a close second with 332.

The Lions' first-place finish came courtesy of four top-seven finishes, that effort led by Paul's victory with 106 points. Also scoring for West Linn were: Chon (third with 85 points); Miller (sixth with 79); and McCurry (seventh with 79).

The complete team scoring included: West Linn 349, Lake Oswego 332, Lake Oswego V2 248, West Linn V2 228, Oregon City 209, Wilsonville 152, Lakeridge 138.
