The West Linn snowboard team is right where it wants to be, and is right where it wants to be at the most important time of the year.
The Lions boys and girls teams swept to victory in the final Three Rivers League competition of the year, and in the process, set the table for the upcoming state snowboard competition. That event kicked off on Wednesday, March 11, and continues through Saturday, March 14, at Mt. Hood Meadows.
In total, West Linn is sending 14 riders to state, with four — Ava Paul, Ashton Bowerly, Lucas O'Doud-Vega and Peter Moller — qualifying in all four events.
Other qualifying riders include: Kyli Miller, Averie McCurry, Ashley Chon, Ronen Retzlaff, Evan Schleef, Derek Pickett, Seth Sorensen, Stephen Whittington, Asher Isaacson, Gavin Genoa and alternate Anders Friis.
In the 2020 TRL finale — a half-pipe competition — the West Linn boys powered past Lake Oswego to finish first with 494 points (the Lakers were second with 377).
The Lions built their success by recording four of the day's top five finishes, that effort led by Bowerly and his winning total of 141 points for the better of his two runs. West Linn's other three varsity scorers included: O'Doud-Vega (third with 126 points); Moller (fourth with 116); and Retzlaff (fifth with 111).
Only Lake Oswego's Josh Lucas and his second-run total of 138 points prevented a West Linn sweep.
For the West Linn V2 team — which placed third overall — it was Sorensen (seventh at 102), Whittington (10th at 97), Friis (14th at 86) and Cole Bundy (19th at 81).
