Lion freshman adds another honor to a season that included a state championship

She battled the state's best — both boys and girls — throughout the year, stepped up to win the OSAA Girls North Regional, then capped her season by winning the girls state championship at 145 pounds.

She added one more trophy to her collection on Wednesday, May 27, when she named Prep Female Wrestler of the Year by the Oregon Sports Awards. Rodriguez is the first-ever recipient of the award.

In her state tournament at the end of February, Rodriguez won three straight times to claim the Oregon championship at 145 pounds.

"It feels pretty good. I'm happy," she said after her championship. "I ended how I wanted to."

Rodriguez opened her tournament with a technical fall victory in her quarterfinal, then added pins in her semifinal and championship to place first.

In the championship against Bend junior Fatima Albarran, Rodriguez scored a takedown 10 seconds into the match, added a pair of three-point near falls in the next 1 minute, 9 seconds and pinned Albarran seven seconds later.

"I just knew I should keep the pressure on the whole time, not stop and just keep going," Rodriguez said. "I was confident. I knew that I was able to do it and I just needed to get it over with."

Her efforts helped the Lions place 12th in the team standings with 23.5 points.
