Lake Oswego boys battle to fifth at Class 6A state golf
It was another day ending in the letter "y" — so the Lakers battled.
The Lake Oswego boys golf team, competing in the Class 6A state tournament at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis on Monday and Tuesday, May 16-17, fought their way to fifth place in the 36-hole event, eventually finishing at 307-301—608.
The complete team scoring included: Summit 280-272—552, Tigard 302-289—591, Sunset 306-289—595, Lincoln 308-298—606, Lake Oswego 307-301—608, Jesuit 316-299—615, Sheldon 326-294—620, Grant 317-304—621, Central Catholic 319-302—621, Beaverton 307-315—622, Grants Pass 318-306—624, McNary 315-313—628, West Linn 318-311—629 and Newberg 331-322—653.
The Lakers, who finished second in the Three Rivers League, then won the Special District 2 regional tournament to qualify for state, were led at state by senior Simon Grey, who tied for 17th with a score of 76-71—147.
He was followed in the standings by: senior Gavin Redpath (tied for 24th at 77-73—150), junior Tanner Frinell (37th at 80-74—154), sophomore Braden Larsen (tied for 77th at 84-83—167) and sophomore Adam Blackmore (74-0—74).
West Linn's boys tested themselves at state, too. After taking second in the SD2 regional to earn their berth at state, the Lions finished 13th at Trysting Tree, led again by senior Arthur Venderby, who tied for 13th at 75-69—144.
He was followed in the standings by: junior Harris Nichols (tied for 53rd at 82-77—159), senior Tyler Crawford (tied for 55th at 78-82—160), senior Caleb Rusk (tied for 73rd at 83-83—166) and senior Owen Caba (83rd at 83-86—169).
Among local individuals who qualified for state: Lakeridge sophomore Nilay Naik tied for 50th at 79-79—158; Lakeridge senior Joey Swanson tied for 60th at 83-78—161; Oregon City senior Andy Austen tied for 69th at 86-79—165; and Clackamas senior Alex Lasko went 80-0—80.
