Clackamas County sports roundup: Which teams are still unbeaten?
With a dozen schools spread across eight cities, there is always some high school sporting event happening in north Clackamas County.
Here are some of the top stories from the past week from around the county, including Lake Oswego, West Linn, Wilsonville, Oregon City, Clackamas, Gladstone, Happy Valley and Milwaukie.
Four teams remain undefeated
Congratulations are in order, at least for a bit longer, to four teams in the north Clackamas County area. The Lake Oswego boys water polo team, the West Linn girls soccer team, the Wilsonville volleyball team and the Putnam football team are all still undefeated after more than six weeks of play.
West Linn has ridden its strong defense to the top of the Three Rivers League standings, while Putnam's high-scoring offense has kept them unbeaten on the gridiron. Lake Oswego and Wilsonville, meanwhile, deploy balanced squads full of versatile pieces.
While each of these programs has taken its own approach to success, the result has so far been the same: lots and lots of wins.
More still perfect in league play
Since the three teams noted above are still unbeaten, each of them must also have an unblemished league record, too. While all of the other teams in the county haven taken losses at one point or another, a handful have been perfect in league play to this point.
In volleyball, Nelson and Oregon City also have undefeated conference records along with Wilsonville. Joining West Linn, the girls soccer teams at Lakeridge, Wilsonville and Gladstone have yet to drop a league match.
In football, Wilsonville and West Linn are unbeaten alongside Putnam. Finally, in boys soccer, it's Lake Oswego, Lakeridge and La Salle Prep.
Hawks continue to impress in Year 2
As noted above, the Nelson volleyball program has surged to an undefeated start through its first 10 league matches. The Hawks made it to the second round of the state playoffs a year ago, but this team led by senior captains Kali Lukovich, Zoe Szczesniak and Madalynn Abraham could go even further this year.
It's not just the volleyball program making strides, either. The Nelson football team moved to 4-1 with a 37-34 win over Barlow on Thursday, Oct. 6. Following an overtime win over Clackamas the week prior, senior kicker Henry Nelson hit the game-winning field goal against the Bruins as time expired on Thursday.
With two programs taking the leap this fall, it's looking like a successful Year 2 is in store at Nelson High School.
The Putnam volleyball team moved to 8-3 in NWOC play after wins over Hood River Valley on Oct. 3 and Centennial on Oct. 5, putting themselves in very good position to make the playoffs alongside Wilsonville, La Salle Prep and Canby. … The Clackamas boys soccer team grabbed a major win over Central Catholic on Wednesday, Oct. 5, defeating the previously unbeaten Rams 3-1 at home. … Lake Oswego and Oregon City traded soccer beatdowns on Thursday, Oct. 6, with the Laker boys winning 9-1 and the Pioneer girls prevailing 4-0. … Lakeridge sophomore midfielder Alexis Gonzalez became just the second player to score on West Linn's defense all year long, as the teams battled to a 1-1 tie in girls soccer on Thursday, Oct. 6.
