Last month, we learned of the common household items and foods that are toxic to your pets. Other toxic items that are commonly in the house include medications. Common ingestions that require immediate attention include the following. This list is not exclusive- if your pet ingests a human prescription, even 1 tablet, please call a veterinarian or poison control immediately.

NSAIDs- non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents - Aleve®(naproxen), Advil®, Motrin® (ibuprofen);

Pain medications - Tylenol ® (acetaminophen) -especially toxic to cats; aspirin and buffered aspirin

Antidepressants -Effecxor®, Cymbalta ®, Prozac®, Lexapro®

ADD/ADHD medications -Concerta®, Adderall®, Ritalin®

Sleep aids and anti-anxiety medications-Xanax®, Klonopin®, Ambien®, Lunesta®

Birth control pills

ACE inhibitors - Zestril®, Altace®

Beta-blockers - Tenormin®, Toprol®, Coreg®

Cholesterol blocking agents - Lipitor®, Zocor®, Crestor®

Thyroid hormones
