Last month I discussed the importance of changing the fluids in your car to prevent costly repairs and keep it running at optimum performance.
Brake fluid collects moisture from the atmosphere therefore, it needs to be changed every 3 years/36,000-mile period. Plus, brake fluid is vital to the safety of your car. Without clean high quality fluid, your anti-lock brake system (ABS) can become compromised as does your stability system.
Power Steering Fluid
Probably the most neglected fluid in your car. It needs to be changed every 5 years or 50,000 miles. If you tow often or are an Uber/Lyft operator change it every 3 years/36,000 miles. Driving with degraded fluid can cause damage to your power steering pump and gear system which can result fluid leaks and loss of power assisted steering. .
Gear Oils for the Front and or Differentials/Axles
Change these oils every 60,000-90,000 miles for towing or Uber/Lyft driving. You can extend these miles longer for moderate driving conditions.
4-Wheel Drive/All-Wheel Drive
Most 4-wheel drive/all-wheel drive have a transfer case (gear box that sends engine power to both front and rear wheel) This fluid should be changed in the 30,000-60,000 miles range. Again, these numbers depend on driving conditions, so if you tow or drive extensively in the city, change it at 30,000 miles, if moderate driving, change it at 60,000 miles.
