Offers local Ag Research tours all summer

Oregon State University Extension Service’s North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC) is offering a number of free events open to the public this summer.

NWREC is hosting a community open house event July 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. that offers an opportunity to taste a variety of berries and vegetables grown by local farmers, meet faculty and staff and learn about their work, and enjoy a walking tour to see research projects. Participants can learn about growing blueberry trees, wasabi and Christmas trees and enjoy hayride farm tours departing at 4, 5 and 6 p.m.

Additionally, free tours for the public are to be held on the first and third Fridays of each month all summer long through Oct. 18 for individuals or small groups. Tours begin at 2 p.m. and conclude by 4 p.m.; call 503-678-1264 to reserve your tour spot.

“We are excited to welcome the public in to see the research center, learn about what we do and why it is important to each and every one of us. We think we have a fascinating story to tell,” said Mike Bondi, NWREC director. “The tours will highlight current research and activities and provide an up-close look at the research and work being done.”

Located on Milely Road near Charbonneau just south of Wilsonville, NWREC is one of 13 agricultural research and development centers around the state operated by OSU. Each center focuses on researching agricultural crops important to the local area and helping farmers address production and technology issues. NWREC’s faculty and staff works on fresh vegetables, berries, Christmas trees, nursery and small-farm production.

“This is an amazing part of the state. Most of Oregon’s food crops are grown around here. In fact, about two-thirds of the entire state’s farm crop value is grown within a 50-mile radius of NWREC — the area we serve,” Bondi said.

Funding for NWREC comes from a combination of federal, state and county sources, plus grants and contracts, and contributions to the Friends of the North Willamette Research and Extension Center. The current NWREC budget is approximately $1,700,000 annually.
