Workshops help improve knowledge about pest management

The OSU Extension Service’s North Willamette Research and Extension Center is sponsoring “OktoberPest” for the 13th season.

OktoberPest is a series of workshops to help improve knowledge about pest management. The focus this year is on five topics: azalea lace bug, aphids, pollinator protection, Verticillium wilt and Pythium diseases. Specific topics include pollinator protection and the impacts of pesticides, particularly neonicotinoid insecticides, on bees and methods of plant disease control.

Classes are held Thursdays, 9 a.m. to noon, at NWREC, 15201 NE Miley Road, Aurora, located just south of Wilsonville across from Charbonneau, with a fee of $25/workshop.

Oct. 17 — “Bee Aware: Pollinator Protection in Ornamental Systems” by Drs. David Stone and Jeff

Jenkins, Department to Molecular and Environmental Toxicology, and Dr. Ramesh Sagili and Robin

Rosetta, Department of Horticulture, OSU. During this workshop, participants will learn more about research-based knowledge for pollinator protection, Colony Collapse Disorder and the impact of neonicotinoid insecticides on honeybees and bumblebees.

Oct. 24 — “Banishing Wilt and Damping Off: Verticillium and Pythium Disease Prevention and

Management” by Dr. Luisa Santamaria, Department of Botany/Plant Pathology, OSU/NWREC and Dr.

Jerry Weiland, Horticultural Crops Research Lab, USDA/ARS. This class will help attendees learn practical tips that can be implemented in nurseries to reduce the risk of plant damage from two soil-based plant pathogens, Verticillium sp. and Pythium sp.

Oct. 31 — “Damage Control: Aphid Management in Ornamental Systems” by Robin Rosetta, Department of Horticulture, OSU/NWREC. This presentation will cover key aspects of aphid pest management including identification, damage, biology, monitoring, and management tactics including cultural, biological and chemical control of these sucking pests.
