City hosts Reindeer Romp and Bullwinkle Bash fun run

by: SUBMITTED - The Reindeer Romp and Bullwinkle Bash will be held Dec. 14 and includes a kids dash, 5K fun run/walk and loads of fun.As the days turn colder, darker and wetter, it’s tempting to curl up on the sofa and munch our way through the holiday season. However, the folks in parks and recreation have another idea. They want the residents of Wilsonville to run and have fun.

Partnering with the Wilsonville Family Fun Center and Bullwinkle’s Restaurant, the city is hosting the Reindeer Romp and Bullwinkle Bash on Dec. 14. The event is a romp of a kids dash and an informal 5K fun run/walk and a bash of an after-party. There may even be a visit from Santa and a giant moose trying to look like Santa.

Using funds from the city’s HEAL (Healthy Eating, Active Living) grant, the coalition was looking for another healthy event to host. The HEAL coalition is responsible for promoting active and healthy lifestyles in Wilsonville. The group is responsible for designating city parks as smoke-free.

According to Patty Brescia, parks and recreation senior programs manager, when looking at the calendar, she found a gap in early December. She wanted to have a physical activity that would also be fun for children and families. So she called Bullwinkle’s Family Fun Center and together they hatched a plan.

“We want to make physical activity fun,” Brescia said. “We are concerned about childhood obesity.”

Since the parks and recreation department does not yet sponsor a fun run, it made perfect sense.

“We are just trying to do something fun when it’s dark and wet outside to get (residents) up and moving,” she said. “I’ve seen the health effects of diabetes and obesity. ... We don’t want to see people go down that road.”

And at just $5 for registration and children 12 and younger free, residents don’t have any reason not to join in on the fun. Those who register early online will receive a T-shirt, reindeer antlers, a red nose and a $5 game card for the Family Fun Center. Registration is $10 on the day of the event.

Day of registration will open at 8 a.m. at Town Center Park, 29600 SW Park Place, with the kids dash at 8:45 a.m. and the 5K starting at 9 a.m. The 5K course will run on sidewalks from Town Center Park to the Family Fun Center and is not timed. Brescia recommends that people park at the Family Fun Center and take a free SMART shuttle to Town Center Park, so their cars are waiting for them at the finish SUBMITTED - Children of all ages will get a photo opt with Bullwinkle the Moose dressed up like Santa after the fun run/walk Dec. 14.

After the romp of running and walking, the bash will begin. According to Melissa McLean, Family Fun Center group sales and marketing director, there will be something for everyone at the finish line. There will be kids’ games, face painting, photo opportunities with Bullwinkle the Moose and Santa, as well as pizza, soda and healthy food options.

“It’s a family event. Anything for the kids, I’m a sucker for,” McLean said. “We’re pretty involved in the community. It’s important to be out there. It’s for a good cause and it’s promoting a healthy activity. I just hope the weather cooperates.”

But rain won’t stop the race, according to Brescia, “We try not to let that be a barrier. It’s Oregon, what are you going to do?”

Brescia is hoping the Reindeer Romp and Bullwinkle Bash is the start of an annual holiday tradition that residents will look forward to each year.

“I think Wilsonville is a great community and people come out for this kind of stuff,” she said.
