by: PAMPLIN MEDIA GROUP: VERN UYETAKE - RoneyLuke Roney has joined the Wilsonville Spokesman staff as editor.

Roney, who brings a decade of news experience to the Spokesman, said he will focus on continuing and growing the paper’s role as the preeminent news source for Wilsonville residents.

“The Spokesman has a great staff that puts out a solid product,” he said. “I look forward to building on that. Our job is to highlight the people, places and happenings that make Wilsonville unique.”

Roney’s background in community journalism is strong. Before signing on with the Spokesman, Roney launched and ran a local news site in Newport Beach, Calif., for AOL’s Patch network. Prior to that, he spent several years at the Orange County Register as an editor and designer on both daily and community products. He began his career as a reporter, and later city editor, at the Hollister Freelance, a small-town daily in Central California.

“For any city, having a sense of community is important,” Roney said. “A large part of a local paper’s duty is to help foster that by telling the stories of the community. It’s a duty I take seriously.”

A native of Southern California, Roney moved to Oregon last year along with his wife, two young sons and cats, Mr. Weiss and Spot.

“It was my wife’s idea, and I ran with it - best decision we’ve ever made,” he said.
