Former student columnist Caitlin Tompkins has joined the Wilsonville Spokesman as a summer intern.

Tompkins also will contribute to Spokesman sister publications the Lake Oswego Review and the West Linn Tidings. She will write stories and work with newsroom staff.

“We’re happy to have Caitlin with us for the summer,” said Luke Roney, editor of the Spokesman and Tidings. “She proved to be an able writer during her time as a student columnist, and we are encouraged to see that her interest in journalism continues.”

A 2012 graduate of West Linn High School who now attends Washington State University, Tompkins was a monthly columnist for the West Linn Tidings during her senior year of high school. Her column topics ranged from accounts of her experiences at a first summer job to a discussion about domestic violence.

“Working as a monthly columnist functioned as a wonderful learning opportunity, as well as a first step toward a career in journalism,” Tompkins said. “I found my way back to the paper for an internship and I couldn’t be more excited.”

Tompkins is majoring in multimedia journalism and minoring in Spanish at WSU. She says she hopes to use the skills she has gained in her journalism classes in real-world situations through her internship.

“I am very lucky to be working with the staff of the Spokesman, Tidings and Review. I look forward to learning as much as I can from them and improving as a writer,” Tompkins said.

This summer, Tompkins is also an intern at the American Diabetes Association.
