Department of Corrections was continuing to insist that the best site for a new Oregon prison was the former site of the Dammash State Hospital (now Villebois).

Wilsonville's Tektronix plant gave notice to 300 employees that their jobs were being terminated. The worldwide company — with a workforce of about 17,000 — was trying to streamline operations and become more profitable. The Wilsonville plant was opened in 1974.

March 4, 1998

Oregon Department of Corrections issued a report rejecting a proposed alternative site for a prison that was supported by Wilsonville city officials. DOC maintained that its choice — site of the former Dammasch State Mental Hospital — would be cheaper for taxpayers. (Editor's note: The "alterative site" eventually became Coffee Creek Correction Facility and the "preferred site" became Villebois.)

Increased police patrols and focus on gang-related activity was showing postive results in Canby. But it appeared to be bad news for Wilsonville, where an increased level of gang-related crimes was noted.

And a Wilsonville man wanted on federal charges of dealing guns without a license was taken without incident — but at gunpoint — by officers as he patronized a local bank.
