Sternwheeler Ruth in Willamette Falls Locks, circa 1897. By 1897, the pulp and paper mills at Willamette Falls were booming, as can be seen in the background of this photo of the sternwheeler Ruth in the locks. The falls themselves can be seen in the background. Ruth operated from 1895 to 1917 and was considered one of the fastest boats on the upper Willamette River. In addition to the Willamette, Ruth also worked on the Yamhill River, up to Dayton.
