Experiencing Memorial Day virtually
Hannah Kim, an ambassador for the Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation USA, visited nearly 180 Korean War memorials in six continents between 2017 and 2019 — including the memorial in Town Center Park in Wilsonville.
To share her experiences with the world, Kim created a website with videos and pictures from her visits and unveiled the site over the Memorial Day weekend. Kim hoped visiting the site will be an impactful alternative to traditional Memorial Day ceremonies that have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"It breaks my heart that most of the Memorial Day commemorations across the nation have been canceled due to COVID-19. I want to ensure that those who died fighting for our freedoms will be remembered and honored, albeit remotely. I hope people will viscerally see that freedom is not free," Kim said in a news release.
The website also includes a virtual Wall of Remembrance of nearly 41,000 people who were killed in the war.
"I wouldn't be here without the sacrifices of the veterans and wish to convey the gratitude of the Korean people. Ultimately, this website is our collective gift to the veterans, their fallen comrades and families," Kim said.
