Though the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly hampered the tourism industry, a new upscale hotel in Wilsonville is slated to open soon.

Construction of the new Hilton Garden Inn, located at 30800 S.W. Parkway Ave., next to I-5, will finish in late July and the hotel will open in late August, according to owner Rohit Sharma.

The hotel will have 118 rooms and include amenities like an indoor pool, conference rooms and a combined basketball and tennis court. Sharma hopes for it to attain a four-star rating and be the nicest hotel in the Portland metro area south of downtown Portland.

Sharma said construction, which began in 2019, has been delayed about 45 days due to the pandemic and that shipping in furniture and other accessories from other countries has been particularly challenging.

He's concerned about the decline in tourism and about large local businesses like Mentor Graphics and Swire Coca-Cola no longer bringing in clients to the degree that they used to, but is hopeful travel will begin to normalize soon. Sharma also said he's planning to keep staffing levels the same as what he initially envisioned (about 30 employees). However, he has also noticed the recent spike in COVID-19 cases nationwide.

"With new (cases) going up, people are waiting and watching how things go," he said. "We are in the middle of June and by the time (we're in) mid-August, I would hope things would have settled down."
