Wilsonville business owner receives export scholarship
Despite the pandemic, Wilsonville resident and business owner Nancy Faubel's ambitions extend beyond United States borders.
Faubel, who owns Corner Coffee Shoppe and the sourdough bakery next door in Town Center, wants to begin exporting products from her brand, Pure Wild Oregon, to Asian markets. And she's optimistic she can do that with the help of a recent scholarship from Greater Portland Inc.
"I think it's going to make a big difference for us," she said.
The economic development organization recently awarded Faubel with an export assistance scholarship, providing her with training, monetary support and resources to eventually export her products outside of the United States.
"Because of the imbalance of trade right now, this country is very interested at a government level to get companies to export," Faubel said. "They're offering loans and grants, which creates jobs and reduces the trade deficit."
The grant program, designed to support businesses owned by women, people of color and veterans, includes training sessions with export advisors and a stipend for international sales activity.
"Exporting is crucial in helping our local businesses grow beyond our region," said Matt Miller, GPI's interim president and CEO, in a press release. "We are proud to connect these entrepreneurs with resources to help them succeed, even in the midst of this downturn. The success of these local businesses is a key component in our region's successful recovery."
Specifically, Faubel thinks her gluten-free taco seasonings could work well as exports to countries like Vietnam, Japan and The Philippines.
"Gluten-free is big in a lot of Asian cultures and is getting big in this country too," she said.
Faubel said the COVID-19 pandemic will stall such plans, however.
"Things are kind of slow in that regard. I think people are skittish because of COVID-19 but when COVID resolves, I think exports will pick back up," she said.
