The majority of the 1,303 Coffee Creek Correctional Facility adults in custody (AICs) who were evacuated from the facility Sept. 10 were transported to Deer Ridge Correctional Institute in Madras.

Jennifer Black, the Oregon Department of Corrections communications manager, said the men in the medium-security facility moved into the minimum-security facility at Deer Ridge and the Coffee Creek women were moved into the medium facility. Black said the minimum facility had been empty since 2016. Also, AICs who are a part of the fire crew fighting the wildfires were moved to the Columbia River Correctional Institution in Portland.

The move to Deer Ridge was first reported by Willamette Week.

The ODOC reported Sept. 10 that AICs were evacuated due to the risk of Santiam and Riverside fires converging. Black also said that conditions at Coffee Creek were smoky.
