Wilsonville-based firefighters with Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, as well as Aurora Fire District, extinguished a fire in a car on Highway 551 just off of the Interstate 5 southbound freeway a few minutes after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, March 31.

According to Aurora Fire District Lieutenant Bill Hansen, a man was traveling on the freeway when he heard a "bang" coming from his engine and subsequently saw smoke. He then pulled over to the side of the road on Highway 551, grabbed some items and his dog and escaped safely before the fire burned into the passenger area. He was not hurt.

The two fire departments have a mutual-aid agreement for responding to incidents on that section of the highway, so both responded and put out the fire quickly.

Hansen said they closed the road for about 10 minutes before opening it up to one lane and then reopened both lanes 30 minutes after that.
