Wilsonville resident awarded volunteer of the year by NW Natural
NW Natural announced this week that it has selected longtime Wilsonville resident John Budiao as its 2021 Volunteer of the Year.
Budiao, who is a communications and control technician for the company, was chosen for his efforts providing veterans with opportunities for work and growth through his nonprofit Operation Spartan Flags. The organization gives local veterans and other emergency responders who are experiencing PTSD, depression and other challenges the opportunity to create flags and other artwork out of reclaimed wood. Budiao has served in the U.S. Marines as well as the U.S. Air Force Reserves and the U.S. Coast Guard.
"While in the Marines, I made a pact with myself that if I made it back, I would do whatever I needed to help veterans know that their lives are worthwhile," Budiao said in a press release.
For Budiao's efforts, NW Natural will provide a grant to Operation Spartan Flags through its Dollars for Doers program.
"We're so inspired by John and all our employees who volunteered in their communities this past year," Melinda Rogers, NW Natural's chief human resources and diversity officer, said in a press release. "We're proud to contribute to their efforts with a Dollars for Doers grant for the nonprofit they serve, which is one of the ways we support our culture of caring and the good work employees do in the community."
