Community members can send letters back and forth with residents of Kitakata, Japan

COURTESY PHOTO - The Kitakata Sister City Advisory Board is providing locals an opportunity to connect with people from across the globe through its pen-pal program.

Beyond the public officials and organizers who get the chance to fly across the globe every few years, the newly formed Kitakata Sister City Advisory Board hopes to give community members the chance to interact with the citizens of Wilsonville's sister city: Kitakata, Japan. This is why it's implementing a pen pal program where community members from both communities can interact with each other.

"The board wants to encourage our community members and families, both young and old, to individually reach out to residents in Kitakata and make long lasting connections. After all it is the students, the grocery store and restaurant workers, the school teachers, shop owners, and so on… that really make up our community," wrote Erica Behler, the city's recreation coordinator.

Behler added that sharing the struggles and good times of the last year could be meaningful and that "finding what connects us across the globe is so important for cultural understanding and connection."

Not to mention, the program is a way to help Kitakata students learn to read and write in English.

Community members can submit letters to the Wilsonville Parks and Recreation Building anytime 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday Jan. 3-28. The letters will then be delivered to Japan Jan. 31. The city has specific information and topics community members may want to put in the letter, which can be found at You can also receive a reply via email rather than mail by providing your email address.
