Students will write monthly, short columns on issues impact schools and our communities.

Are you a high schooler passionate about writing and sharing your opinions? If so, you should apply to be a member of our Student Writers Advisory Group (SWAG).

Why be a SWAG writer? This opportunity is a great way to become published, gain journalism experience and meet other talented writers from local high schools. Members must be from Wilsonville and attend one of the high schools in the city (virtual learning and homeschooled students are also accepted).

The Wilsonville Spokesman is looking to give a platform to new voices about issues impacting schools and youth — and who better than students?

As a staff, we know high school students are our eyes and ears in local schools and communities. We value your opinions and want to allow your voices to be heard.

SWAG members will attend monthly meetings to discuss various topics to get ideas flowing before settling on a topic that interests the group. Topics may range from mental health to sports. SWAG member articles will be fairly short in length (about 300-500 words) and written monthly.

As a SWAG member, you will learn valuable skills you can carry with you for the rest of your life. You will be expected to adhere to a strict deadline, collaborate with other students and staff, and will need to be committed to sending in consistent copy with a specific word count.

The aspiring student writers will be chosen by staff after applying to be part of a team of unique voices for the youth in our community.

To apply, students must submit a short cover letter detailing their writing experience, why they want to write for the Spokesman, and two writing samples (samples from school assignments are acceptable) by Monday, Sept. 12.

The groups will be formed at the end of September and start right away.
