A new federal program allows income-qualifying households to receive a $30 to $75 monthly discount on broadband internet.Oregon education leaders are reminding families about a federal program that provides discounts on monthly internet for low-income households.

The Affordable Connectivity Program, enacted as part of the Biden-Harris administration's Infrastructure Law, provides a $30 discount on monthly high-speed internet bills to qualifying households. Households on tribal lands can qualify for $75 off their monthly broadband bill. The program also provides a one-time $100 discount on the purchase of a laptop, tablet or desktop computer.

"Having a reliable connection to the internet will help students at home and support their learning," said Marc Siegel, communications director for the Oregon Department of Education.

There are three ways to qualify for the program.

A person or household must be at or below 200% of the federal poverty level (that's an annual income of $27,180 for a single person, or $36,620 for a two-person household), receive SNAP benefits, Medicaid, SSI or WIC benefits, free or reduced-price school lunch, a veterans pension and survivors benefit, or similar public assistance program. Anyone who meets their internet provider's existing low-income eligibility program also qualifies. Qualifying residents or households can send in an application by email at the program website, call (877) 384-2575, or contact an internet service provider that participates in the Affordable Connectivity Program from a list here.

"To deliver maximum cost savings to families, the Biden-Harris Administration has secured commitments from 20 leading internet providers to offer ACP-eligible households a high-speed internet plan for no more than $30 per month," a statement on the White House website reads. "Eligible families who pair their ACP benefit with one of these plans can receive high-speed internet at no cost."
