Here's why you should vote for Jordan Ferris
It's interesting that in a recent "Citizen's View" that Mr. Miller chose to attack Ms. Ferris for being a working mom that has no place voicing her opinion in a local school board election.
Is it his opinion that moms who work for a living and care for their children, shouldn't run for public office? Does that mean that only the retired and stay-at-home-moms should run, not working moms and dads?
Then he continues his attack by painting her as a "progressive," attempting to make being a progressive sound as bad as labeling someone as a "Communist or Socialist" in the Joe McCarthy era. And this in a state that has been a leader in "progressive" ideas, led by progressive leaders like Tom McCall (beach bill, land use laws) Barbara Roberts and Mark Hatfield.
What he is forgetting when he says Ms. Ferris has no place mentioning ideas and organizations she believes in and supports her, is a way for voters to know the candidate. We really would want to know if a candidate supports the NRA or National Right to Life — that might tell us two things about the person.
One, they may want to allow guns into our schools by arming our teachers, and protect the use of automatic weapons. And two, they may want to cut back on sex education; this in an era of "#metoo."
The past two years our "progressive" school board has pressed for openness of the district and planning that would make Athey Creek into a high school and moving the middle school to the Dollar Street property. A long-needed proposed change that takes a middle school that not one child can bike or walk to, into one that has "safe routes and corridors to school."
No Mr. Miller, Ms. Ferris deserves to be on the board as we know where she stands and isn't trying to hide her affiliations and opinions. We also believe that Chelsea King Martin has shown us that she deserves to remain on the board.
These are both well qualified working moms, and yes, if their ideas are progressive, and keep our school district from being regressive, then please label us as progressive also.
